India seems to be getting too hot for Monsanto..First there was this ban by the Bihar government on the sale of Monsanto's maize seeds in the state, after its hybrid failed last season.. Farmers are up in arms demanding compensation..
Then came the denial of permission by the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee for sale of Monsanto's BT cotton variety in the northern states. This has ensured there would be no genetically modified crops in North India for at least a year more..
Monsanto is unfazed, naturally.
It has seven co-licensess of its cotton seed technology and at least one of them, Raasi Seeds, is in advanced stages of trials..And Monsanto's BT cotton continues to be sold in the south and west..
The multinational hopes it can get the permission for North in a year or two.. One does not know how successful it will be..
